Tucked in the heart of North Philadelphia, George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science (Carver) is a top-performing magnet school known for academic excellence and preparing future changemakers in STEM fields. Since 1979, Carver has grown into one of the most respected schools in the district, it was awarded the US Dept of Education National Blue Ribbon Schools designation for its offering of a rigorous curriculum that challenges students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and engage in real-world learning.
Serving grades 7–12, Carver offers specialized programs in engineering, biomedical sciences, and environmental sustainability. With a focus on equity and access, the school works to ensure that all students—especially those historically underrepresented in STEM—have the mentorship and support to thrive.
In recent years, Carver has expanded its approach to success by integrating mindfulness and well-being into its school culture. Through a valued partnership with Inner Strength Education (ISE), students have had access to mindfulness programming since 2017, imparting tools for stress management, emotional regulation, and inner awareness.
Mindfulness retreats offer students the chance to pause, reflect, and connect more deeply—with themselves and each other. Simple practices like meditation and mindful breathing help them stay grounded through academic pressures, life transitions, and everyday stress.
By weaving mindfulness into Carver’s already rich academic landscape, ISE supports a holistic vision of success—one that values both achievement and emotional wellness. Together, we’re preparing students not only to succeed in STEM fields, but to thrive as compassionate, grounded individuals in a complex world.
