Authenticity: A Teacher’s Superpower

In the latest episode of the Conscious Classroom podcast, Amy Edelstein delves into the question of what Authenticity truly is, how it strengthens us and our ability to be effective educators, and ways that mindfulness practice can lead us to a greater understanding of this superpower.

The episode titled “Embracing Authenticity and Mindfulness in Teaching: Creating a Genuine Connection in the Classroom” unpacks the profound impact authenticity  can have on both educators and students, fostering a learning environment that is safe, supportive, and conducive to growth.

Contrary to much of popular culture and reality TV, Edelstein explains, is not about expressing raw emotions. It’s far more nuanced, complex and directional. Authenticity includes a blend of vulnerability, integrity, and alignment with one’s core values. When we are true to ourselves, when we know what our core values are, we can then guide our students with integrity and resilience.

Mindfulness plays a crucial role in cultivating authenticity. By integrating mindfulness into daily routines, educators can become more present and self-aware, leading to spontaneous and liberating teaching moments. Mindfulness helps in understanding the motivations behind our actions, which is essential for creating a genuine connection with students. It also allows educators to balance the multiple roles they embody, fostering an environment where students can face challenges independently and grow from their experiences.

By centering ourselves authentically, we contribute to a resilient and impactful educational experience. A mindful approach to teaching can help in creating a classroom atmosphere that is free from fear and ulterior motives, where students feel safe to express themselves and explore their potential.

Edelstein also touches upon the necessity for students to experience and navigate challenges on their own. Overprotecting students can hinder their ability to develop problem-solving skills and resilience. It’s essential for students to struggle with things they don’t understand in a positive way, allowing them to dig deep and find their own resources. Educators play a crucial role in discerning when a student is in a negative struggle and when they are simply facing a healthy challenge that will help them grow.
